Are we called the lone star state because of the flags solo star or does the flag have one star because of the lone star nickname?

The answer to that question is, kinda, yes. We'll get to that in a bit, for now here are a few interesting things about the state flag of Texas that you may not know.

First, like the United States of America flag, it has its own pledge of allegiance.  It goes like this: "Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible".

The phrase "under God" was added in 2007, an amendment that generated some controversy, mostly hinged on the separation of church and state principle

The wording of the pledge is set in stone but there is no requirement for anyone, under any circumstances, to recite it.

Back to the original question, it's kind of a "what came first, the chicken or the egg?" thing. The flag itself, based on its design, was quickly nicknamed the "lone star flag" because, obviously, it has just the one "lone" star.

The flags moniker then inspired the lone star STATE nickname. So, as to how one affected the other, that's the order of things.

Texas's nickname pays tribute to the Lone Star flag, which was adopted after Texas became independent from Mexico in 1836. Texas was an independent republic for ten years before accepting annexation to the United States, and the flag reflects the pride and go-it-alone spirit that is still part of the Texas way of life. - storyoftexas.com

The "lone star" motto inspired the name of Texas' favorite beer too.
