National Pumpkin Day celebrates the most popular squash of them all. Didn't know that pumpkins are a variety of squash? Well, now you do!

Pumpkins are the most useful things during this time of year because you can use the inside for tasty treats and you can decorate the porch or house with what is left after you dig out all the inner parts.

Pumpkin lovers cannot wait for this time of the year to make pumpkin everything. From cookies to coffee to even pasta, pumpkin everything means today is the perfect time for this national day.

The pumpkin is native to North America and the oldest evidence of pumpkin-related seed dates all the way back to 7000 and 5500 BC in Mexico.

The word pumpkin is Greek and originates from the word pepon which is Greek for "large melon."

The largest pumpkin on record was found in Italy and came in at 2,703 pounds which beat the former biggest pumpkin from Switzerland in 2014 which was a measly 2,400 pounds.

Pumpkins also have a lot of nutrients and are also good for dogs and cats. Veterinarians will tell you to feed pumpkin to your dog or cat if they are having digestion issues. Pumpkins are easy to digest so don't be shocked if your veterinarian prescribes pumpkin puree.
