This YouTube Violinist Plays K-Pop (and Britney), and It’s a Lovely Distraction From the World
Meet Gutek, the multilingual violinist making K-pop bops and soundtrack songs — and also Britney Spears' "Slumber Party" — sound as fancy, regal and lovely as they deserve to be.
For the most part, the YouTube musician tackles the biggest and best idol groups and solo acts: BLACKPINK, RAIN, NCT 127, SEVENTEEN, SHINee, TWICE, Taeyeon. They're all there — and so is Britney's "Slumber Party (feat. Tinashe)," which...appears to be the only actual Western pop offering on his page thus far.
Basically, he loves Britney and K-pop, which means Gutek and I already have a lot in common.
Gutek captions all of his videos the same way: "Hi. My name is Gutek and currently I live in Korea. I'm professionaly [sic] trained violinist who likes to play pop music in classical way. If you want to watch more violin versions of k-pop songs then please subscribe to my channel to motivate me. Have a good listening. Enjoy."
His most popular cover thus far is a cover of EXO's Chanyeol and Punch's "Stay With Me" from the soundtrack of Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, a massively popular K-drama — the final episode of which was the second-highest rated drama episode in Korean cable television history. (Fun fact.)
Gutek recently hit 1,000 subscribers, and did a Q&A in celebration, talking about life in South Korea ("people are very friendly!"), his name (which is also "Gutek" in Korean) and his love of all types of music.
Gutek is currently taking requests in the comments section, but know that he requires time: he's arranging, composing, recording, mixing, editing and uploading these videos all by himself — so please, be patient.
Fill up your clawfoot bath with bubbles, lay back, enjoy the sound of some Classicalney and begin plotting how you'll book Gutek to play the first dance at your wedding.
