SpongeBob’s Broadway Bound: Bikini Bottom Making Manhattan Move
SpongeBob might live in a pineapple under the sea, but he'll soon have a second home on The Great White Way.
The iconic Nickelodeon cartoon, which premiered in 1999, is becoming an official New York City musical, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with previews starting as early as November. The show premiered in Chicago in 2016 at The Oriental Theater.
The SpongeBob Broadway story will find its titular character and his friends trying to contend with imminent disaster in their Bikini Bottom home. Doom seems unstoppable when, out of the blue, a "most unexpected hero rises to the surface."
And if that's not enough of a sell, the show's music might have you rushing to the closest shoreline. The production features original tunes from Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Yolanda Adams, Sara Bareilles, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! at the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I., with an additional song by David Bowie and additional lyrics by Jonathan Coulton.
And Twitter immediately went wild with the news. One fan wrote "There's a Spongebob musical that's gonna debut on broadway & it has music from Bowie & that's seriously what is gonna play @ my funeral," while another noted "date idea: take them to see spongebob on broadway and then the emoji movie after."
