Underage drinking has become a problem in Odessa and now a new city ordinance will punish adults who have parties and allow underage people to drink.

According to NewsWest 9, the new Social Host Accountability ordinance was approved on Tuesday and fines people who provide the space and place for underage people to consume alcohol.

Fines will range from $250 to $2000 and will cite the following:

  • If the adult hosts a party at their home and there is underage drinking, it’s a fine for the property owner.
  • If the adult rents a room at a hotel, and there’s underage drinking, fines will be issued.
  • If the adult rents a community room and underage drinking is involved, fines will be issued as well.

Odessa becomes the fourth city in Texas to approve this kind of ordinance.
