School is back in session so police want to remind motorists to watch out for school zones and be aware of them.

According to NewsWest 9, during the last school year Odessa police wrote over 500 citations for speeding in school zones, and responded to almost 20 major crashes that happened inside of school zones.

So police are reminding residents to be aware of the 20-25 mph speed inside school zones and watch for the yellow flashing lights.

Also don't forget Texas State Law prohibits cell phone use in a school zone while the zone is active and remember to watch for crosswalks and students using the crosswalk.

The fine for speeding in a school zone in Odessa is a maximum of $300, and the fine for using a cell phone in an active school zone is a maximum of $232.
