A new medical marijuana facility is opening in San Marcos and is expected to bring hundreds of jobs to the area.

According to the Midland Reporter-Telegram, an Atlanta-based cannabis company called Parallel announced on April 19, 2021 that they are planning a 63,000 square foot cannabis cultivation, production, and retail facility in San Marcos to increase access for medical marijuana patients in and around San Antonio.

The Parallel facility is going to "meet the growing patient demand for medical cannabis products in the Lone Star State" according to a press release from the company.

The demand is expected to go up quickly id HB 1535 passes in the Texas Legislature.

That bill would expand the number of Texans who qualify for medical marijuana and has already been unanimously voted out of committee and is expected to pass in the House before the end of the 2021 session.

Parallel also announced it would be changing the name of its retail brand from Surterra Texas to Goodblend Texas and will offer virtual clinic services with cannabis snacks like lozenges, gummies, and elixirs.

"We are thrilled to break ground today on our new facility in San Marcos. We look forward to creating economic empowerment opportunities in this community through new jobs and cannabis career-building programs," said President of Goodblend Texas, Marcus Ruark. "We are encouraged that there is a growing recognition, trust and demand for our medical cannabis products in Texas. While our customers will now know us as Goodblend Texas, we will continue to offer registered patients with the state's largest assortment of cannabis-based product formats."

There was no word on when the San Marcos facility is expected to open.
