Lena Dunham, Jenni Konner in Talks to Write American ‘Toni Erdmann’ Remake
Having just finished up the final season of HBO’s Girls, Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner are in the market for more off-kilter comedy, and what should pop up on their radar’s this week but the American remake of German comedy (no, seriously) Toni Erdmann.
The original was a Best Foreign Language Film nominee at this past Oscars and generated a ton of buzz after its premiere in competition at Cannes, so it was only a matter of time before a U.S. version was announced. Today, Tracking Board has the exclusive on Dunham and Konner, who are in negotiations to team up on the script. The American version will star Jack Nicholson and Kristen Wiig.
Toni Erdmann is about a workaholic daughter whose father goes to great lengths to reconnect with her, developing an alternate personality he dubs “Toni Erdmann,” pretends to be a life coach, and generally makes his daughter’s life pretty weird.
Adam McKay, Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum are producing the remake. The film doesn’t have a director yet, but that announcement should come pretty soon, so stay tuned.
