‘How I Met Your Mother’ Spinoff Back in Development With New Writers (Again)
Brace yourself, that How I Met Your Mother spinoff is coming around for another pass. After CBS’ initial attempt at a How I Met Your Dad and FOX’s This Is Us-superseded version, a third group of 20th Century Fox writers will take aim at a female-focused reboot.
Per Deadline, FOX boss Dana Walden says “the studio will try (developing a spinoff) with different writers,” after its most recent attempt with This Is Us writers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger was shelved by their promotion to showrunners. The as-yet-unhired writers will start from scratch with a different take from Aptaker and Berger, while Walden says “If it’s the right idea the right execution, we’ll take that.”
It was back in May that Walden also expressed interest in reviving the original series outright, though creator-producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are occupied with a production deal at Sony TV. Josh Radnor’s Rise was also taken to series at NBC, while Neil Patrick Harris and Cobie Smulders have Netflix’s Series of Unfortunate Events and Friends From College, atop Jason Segel or Alyson Hannigan’s availability.
It’s possible How I Met Your Dad could get up and running in time for the next development cycle, but should 20th Century Fox TV consider leaving the property dormant a few more years?
