A new phone scam is happening in the Midland area and law enforcement officials want you to know it is not them.

According to CBS 7, the Midland Police Department is alerting residents that if you get a phone call from someone claiming it is them to hang up and don't give out any information.

The scammers are posing as local, county, state, and federal law enforcement and claim there is a warrant out for your arrest and you will be taken into custody if you do not transfer money for the fine to them.

Police are saying the scammers are able to spoof local phone numbers, even using the Midland County Sheriff's Office number.

Law enforcement officials say they will not call you and harass you for money if you have a warrant out for your arrest, and if you don't have a warrant out for your arrest then you should hang up immediately.

You know better than anyone if you have done anything the would put you in a position to have a warrant out for your arrest, so if you know that you haven't done anything then it should be easy to hang up on anyone saying you do have a warrant.

But many will think they can't remember something they have done and fall for the scam, don't be that person.

If you receive one of the scam calls, you can report it to the FBI by calling the regional office in El Paso at (915) 832-5000.
