Last year brought word that Ex Machina director Alex Garland would take his sci-fi talents to TV for a new FX series, though the director has since turned his gaze to Annihilation. Now, Garland provides a few hints of what to expect for the eight-part series, which itself may begin production later this year.

It was back in July that Garland signed an exclusive overall deal to develop, write and produce television projects at FX. His prior writing credits include 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Dredd and more, though few details were suggested of what FX projects Garland might take on. As the Annihilation director now tells Fandango, however, we can likely expect an eight-part sci-fi series more in the spirit of his directorial breakout Ex Machina than his most recent film:

The next project, provided it happens – hopefully we’re gonna shoot it later this year – [and it’s] an eight-part television series for FX. It’s a sort of science fiction, but it’s a much more technology based sci fi whereas ‘Annihilation’ is a more hallucinogenic form of sci fi and more fantastical form of sci fi. This is slightly more in common with projects I’ve worked on like ‘Ex Machina’ or ‘Never Let Me Go,’ which are taking something about our world now – not our world in the future, but our world as it is right now – and then drawing sort of inferences and conclusions from it.

Garland specified that he intends to direct all eight episodes of the already-written project himself, though “for practical reasons that might not be possible.” FX has not offered much indication the project will shoot this year, but stay tuned for the latest.
