15 Things To Know About The Fourth Of July

As we gear up for the long holiday weekend to celebrate America's birthday, I thought I would share with you some 4th of July facts you may or may not know.

1. The Declaration of Independence was ratified in 1776 but July 4th didn't become a paid federal holiday until 1941.

2. The population of the United States in 1776 was about 2.5 million and now it's over 330 million.

3. In 1785, Bristol, Rhode Island held the first 4th of July parade.

4.76% of Americans consider themselves patriotic.

5. There have been 27 different versions of the American Flag. We have had the current design for the last 62.

6.  54% of us have an American flag at home, and 40% of those people say they display it every day.

7. 26% of Americans will buy patriotic products for the Fourth.  Most think things like flag hats and t-shirts are fine to wear.  17% think it's disrespectful to the flag though.

8. 65% of Americans say they do their best to buy things made in the U.S.A.

9. Three different presidents DIED on the Fourth of July:  John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe.  Jefferson and Adams actually died on the SAME DAY, July 4th, 1826.  Only one president was born on the Fourth:  Calvin Coolidge in 1872.

10. The average amount spent on BBQs for the 4th is up this up to $69.18, which is up $10.00 from last year.

11. Around 150 Million hot dogs will be eaten this weekend.

12. July 4th is the number one holiday for drinking at home.

13. Joey Chesnut is the favorite to win the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. Last year he ate 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes. He has won the contest for the last six years and has won a total of 14 out of 15 times.

14. One-third of Americans will go and watch fireworks.
