Look, there’s only so many heroes you can fit into a single trailer. Still, the Avengers: Infinity War trailer (and the trailers and posters and clips and stills) have given us at least one glimpse of everyone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe except for two heroes: Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man and Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye. Rudd’s absence is understandable; Marvel doesn’t want to spoil anything involving his next movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp. (Plus, he’s really small. He’s probably in every single shot in the trailer and we just didn’t notice.) But Hawkeye’s got no excuse. Unless, like, Thanos kills poor Clint in the very first scene of the film. So where is he?

The folks over at /Film got an answer out of the Russo brothers their visit to the Infinity War set. Here’s what Joe Russo said:

Coming out of Civil War, he’s in the same position that Cap and Falcon are at the end of that movie. And Ant-Man. Coming into this movie, you know… Characters on Cap’s side coming out of the Civil War, some made certain decisions and others made other decisions that led to different paths in them dealing with oversight in this movie in a different way. So Hawkeye’s on his own journey in this movie.

Okay, that’s all well and good. Hawkeye was in prison. I guess prisons don’t just let people out when evil aliens show up. Still, I have an idea of my own to explain Hawkeye’s absence:

This is why Hawkdad is the best Avenger, so he better have a big awesome part in Infinity War that we just haven’t seen any of yet. (There are other other possible explanations out on the web that involve set photos and Renner wearing an important costume that I will not spoil for you; but if you want to know, they’re out there.) Avengers: Infinity War opens in theaters on April 27.
