Thousands of documents containing social security numbers and birth dates found in an unsecured city recycle bin this week.

According to NewsWest 9, the recycle dumpster the documents were found in was one of the many in the city that residents can throw recyclables in and the lids are usually left open to where the papers could have blown out.

Once the documents were discovered, they were taken to a recycle center where they were shredded for free to protect people's personal information.

Keep in mind any documents that have your personal information should be shredded before they are thrown into a recycle bin to protect yourself from identity theft.
