Most people believe since Texas Tech is only 100 miles away from the Midland/Odessa area, that is the team most people in our area are rooting for, but is that true?

According to the Midland Reporter-Telegram, UT and Texas A&M are the superpowers in Texas, but there are other teams that have plenty of box office appeal.

Looking at data from Vivid Seats over the past decade, excluding 2020 because of limited crowds, a picture of college football fandom in Texas does show the 5 major colleges in Texas, (University of Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, University of Houston, and Baylor University) are predominantly more popular in their own region.

But there are counties in Texas that defy their region, the oddest is Val Verde County, where Del Rio is located, there the University of Houston has a lot more ticket sales there even though they are about 350 miles away from Houston.

Another oddity is Hebbronville in Jim Hogg County where ticket sales are slightly higher for Texas Tech which is over 500 miles away.

Texas Tech has several oddities also in South Texas and East Texas. The farthest area of Texas that has a good amount of Texas Tech tickets sold is Deweyville, TX which is close to the Louisiana border and is closer to New Orleans than it is to Lubbock.

But for Midland/Odessa, our ticket sales go more to Texas Tech, as expected, but there is plenty of support for the University of Texas and Texas A&M also since they do have a lot of alumni living in the area thanks to the oilfield.
