IT is the biggest horror film of the year, and if you still haven’t seen Andy Muschietti’s surprisingly great adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel (doubtful, you’re smart people), then perhaps the opening scene from the movie will persuade you…or maybe it’ll just reinforce your decision to stay the heck at home in your comfy, cozy, sewer clown-free environment. Beep beep!

Okay, it’s not the very first scene from IT, but it is the most significant moment in the first 10 minutes of the film: Bill Denbrough (Jaeden Lieberher) helps his younger brother Georgie construct a paper boat and sends him off to watch it sail down the street in the rain. But then the boat gets ahead of Georgie and zips straight into the sewer, where it’s caught by Pennywise the dancing clown / child-eating nightmare factory. Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard doing that damn thing with his eyes) invites Georgie down to check out the “circus,” but just as the kiddo has second thoughts…well, you know what happens next.

Even though Georgie’s death is merely presumed at this point, that bloody opening is certainly a bold mission statement for a PG-13 horror film; if a little kid isn’t safe in this town, then all bets are off. Still, IT manages to be a weirdly entertaining and kind of fun horror flick despite that gruesome opening.

If you still haven’t checked it out, what better time than the weekend before Halloween?
