‘Triple Frontier’ Not Dead Yet, Gets an Assist From Netflix and the Affleck Brothers

Triple Frontier has had one of the weirdest and most fraught production histories in recent memory, and while Paramount axed the film from its schedule three weeks ago, it’s not over yet. J.C. Chandor’s film, which was supposed to star Channing Tatum, Tom Hardy, and Mahershala Ali (after it was supposed to be directed by Kathryn Bigelow some years ago), has lost two of its actors and its release date, but it just got a few helping hands from some surprising sources.

Deadline reports Netflix is among the frontrunners who have stepped in to save the project, and, if a deal ends up being made, are saving the two lead parts for Ben and Casey Affleck. Ali is still firmly onboard, and Chandor still plans to direct. The film takes its name from the border zone between Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil where crime and drugs run rampant and lawless.

This would be the latest in a string of extremely high-profile projects the streaming service has snatched up. A Martin Scorsese movie is coming to the site, along with films starring Will Smith, Brad Pitt, all those Adam Sandler projects, and, most recently, Chris Pine and Ben Foster. Netflix is developing a reputation for itself for providing an outlet to films and directors who are perhaps too daring or weird for major production companies to take any interest and, if this deal works out, it has a very good chance of offering the same opportunity to Triple Frontier.
