FOX X-Men drama The Gifted may not have many major Marvel names or colorful costumes, but might be inching toward one of the weirdest X-villains out there. Deadwood favorite and FOX alum Garret Dillahunt joins in a recurring role believed to be that of X-Men baddie “Ahab.”

The character may not sport a peg leg and purple robot suit just yet, but Deadline reports that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Raising Hope alum Dillahunt will join The Gifted in the “key recurring role” of Roderick Campbell, described as “a mutant researcher contracted by the Sentinel Services. Professorial, intense and intimidating, Dr. Campbell has a morally dubious mission yet to be revealed.”

The comic Campbell/Ahab worked with Moira MacTaggert at the Muir Island Mutant Research Center, and discovered himself to have become a mutant-hunter in the Days of Future Past timeline. The character has also had dealings with the Hellfire Club, and even became one of Apocalypse’s horsemen, though that seems a ways off for an X-drama with few comic sensibilities just yet.

In addition to True Blood alum Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker and Gotham alum Natalie Alyn Lind, also cast in the series is Emma Dumont as Lorna Dane/Polaris, Coby Bell, Sean Teale as Eclipse, Jamie Chung as Marvel mutant Blink and Switched at Birth star Blair Redford as Native American mutant leader Thunderbird.

The Gifted will premiere on October 2, so stay tuned for the latest on FOX’s Marvel drama.
