Texas Senator Files Bill to Protect 2nd Amendment Right in Churches
Senator Donna Campbell filed the bill to make sure the rights of Texas citizens to lawfully carry firearms in churches and other places of worship were upheld.
According to NewsWest 9, Senate Bill 535 incorporates the opinion of Attorney General Ken Paxton on carrying legally in the state.
“We have learned many times over that there is no such thing as a gun free zone. Those with evil intentions will violate the law and carry out their heinous acts no matter what,” Senator Campbell stated. “It makes no sense to disarm the good guys and leave law-abiding citizens defenseless where violent offenders break the law to do great harm.”
The bill will still allow those churches to post "No Open Carry" and No Concealed Firearms" signs if they so desire.
Campbell's bill will also seek to reduce penalties for licensed citizens who were not aware they were carrying in prohibited areas, but it would increase the penalty from misdemeanor to felony for any armed person who refuses to leave a place where weapons are prohibited after they are asked to leave.
