Supergirl set off something of a mini-mystery with news that Cyborg Superman would appear in next week’s “The Darkest Place,” forcing producers to clarify that Tyler Hoechlin wouldn’t be returning just yet. A number of probable candidates could possibly fill the cyborg boots, but our first trailer for “The Darkest Place” may have revealed an unexpectedly obvious solution.

In addition to a brand-new crossover trailer, Monday’s Supergirl brought with it a first look at next week’s “The Darkest Place,” in which Kara infiltrates Project Cadmus to rescue Mon-El (Chris Wood). Toward the end of the promo, Kara is seen fighting what looks to be Martian Manhunter (in David Harewood form), but may actually be that of the original Hank Henshaw, Cyborg Superman’s comic identity, who J’onn assumed in flashback.

Initially, a fan-favorite theory suggested Cyborg Superman could be what became of Kara’s adoptive father Jeremiah Danvers, played by fellow former Superman Dean Cain. Both Jeremiah and Henshaw supposedly died in the original mission to hunt down J’onn J’onzz, though only Jeremiah has since been revealed as alive, and a captive of Cadmus at that.

Here’s the “Darkest Place” synopsis, for reference:

IT’S SUPERGIRL VS. CYBORG SUPERMAN — While Guardian (Mehcad Brooks) tries to clear his name after being accused of a murder committed by another vigilante, Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) heads out on a solo mission to rescue Mon-El (Chris Wood) who has been captured by CADMUS. While fighting to free Mon-El, Supergirl comes face to face with Cyborg Superman.

There are still other options, but it might make a roundabout sort of sense for David Harewood to end up playing the Supergirl role he initially signed on for. The promo might be misleading, so which character best suits Cyborg Superman?
