Sunday Liquor Sales Could Become a Reality in Texas By Fall 2021

Texas has the most restrictive rules on alcohol in the country, but maybe the pandemic has changed the view of people in the Texas Legislature.

According to the Midland Reporter-Telegram, it is time for a new legislative session and that means the subject of allowing alcohol sales on Sunday is back on the docket.

Texas State House Rep. Richard Raymond has just filed HB 937 which would allow liquor stores to sell alcohol on Sundays and expand sale hours to 9am-10pm Monday-Saturday and Noon-10pm on Sundays.

Currently grocery stores in Texas can sell beer and wine after Noon on Sundays so why not have liquor stores sell liquor during the same hours? I am fine with this.

Besides Texas, the only other states that do not allow alcohol sales on Sunday are: Alabama, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Utah.

Which means all our neighboring states can sell you alcohol on Sunday if those of us want to make the 45 minute to an hour drive to New Mexico.

The Texas State Legislature has already passed laws to allow to-go beer to be sold from craft breweries and Gov. Greg Abbott allowed the sale of to-go alcohol during the pandemic and has already stated he wants to keep that practice going.

If HB 937 passes in the State Legislature, alcohol sales on Sundays could begin as soon as September 1, 2021.
