Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez filed the bill to move Sul Ross and its Rio Grande area college in to the Texas A&M University System.

According to NewsWest 9, Texas Senate Bill 522 would move Sul Ross and it'd Rio Grande college from the Texas State University System to A&M's system.

"After speaking with the community at length and having thoroughly researched Angelo State University’s vast improvement after joining the Texas Tech University System, moving Sul Ross State University is the right decision for the institution, the students and faculty, and both Alpine and West Texas as a whole," Gutierrez said.

A press release put out by Gutierrez's office stated that both Sul Ross and it's Rio Grande college had declined in enrollment numbers since 2009 by approximately 20%.

In contrast Angelo State University has seen a 4,000 student increase from 2010 to 2019 after becoming a Texas Tech system university.

Senator Gutierrez also stated that the Texas A&M system is known for "rehabilitating and improving institutions."

"I have the utmost confidence that this will give Sul Ross State University and Rio Grande Colleges the stimulus we need for these institutions to grow and prosper," Gutierrez said.

With the dropping enrollment at Sul Ross, the senator is hoping that being a part of the A&M System will help out enrollment.
