Some Juvenile Migrants Shipped to Midland Test Positive for COVID-19

The juvenile migrants that are being housed at a facility in Midland have had some test positive for COVID-19.

According to the Midland Reporter-Telegram, 53 of the 485 minors being held at the facility have tested positive which is about 11% of the total number of migrants.

The U.S. Health and Human Services Dept. has said they are following CDC guidelines for quarantining the juvenile migrants but provided no other details.

“The concern we have with that is if someone comes to pick the child up, as they’re telling us they’re going to do, will they release that child, or will that child have to remain in quarantine until they’re released?” said Midland Mayor Patrick Payton.

U.S. Health and Human Services have stated that those with COVID-19 will stay in quarantine.

The teens are being held at the Cotton Logistics man camp southwest of Midland so it is not known if the positive cases of the migrants will add to the community spread or not, but the federal staff caring for the migrant teens are living at the facility and it is believed COVID protocols are being followed by the staff.

U.S. Health and Human Services officials said that the teens that need hospitalization will be sent to Midland Memorial Hospital.

It is not too common for teenagers to have severe COVID-19 symptoms unless they have a health condition.

U.S. Health and Human Services opened the shelter on Sunday night in Midland to help with the overcrowding at Border Control facilities.
