Serena Williams May Have Broken ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Fans
No one expects a world of magic martial arts and cabbage legacies to keep consistent, but tennis icon Serena Williams may have served Avatar: The Last Airbender fans a volley they can’t return. The athlete has taken to Twitter with a glaring inconsistency of the franchise, and we’re bent out of shape over it.
It started innocently enough, with Williams questioning an inconsistency in the origins of “bending,” as presented in both Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, and generational follow-up The Legend of Korra. The athlete asked Twitter fans why the original series presented various fictional animals as inspiration for the martial arts that enable characters to control the elements, while The Legend of Korra features a two-part flashback to the first “Avatar” gaining his powers from a mythical lion-turtle (don’t ask):
As you can imagine, fans were practically lining up to offer their own theories on Williams’ conundrum, some of which involve complex relationships between humans, animals and “lion sea turtles,” as well as “bending chakras”:
It isn’t known what exactly prompted Williams’ line of inquiry, though it’s worth noting that she has appeared in both series with minor roles. And while the Legend of Korra and Avatar universe currently lives on in comics, neither creators Bryan Konietzko nor Mike Dante DiMartino have stepped in to clarify any points of confusion with bending history. Man, where’s Pablo Hidalgo when you need him?
If you’d care to venture a guess, both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are available to stream on Amazon.
