Sara Bareilles' 'Brave' may sound a bit like 'Roar' by Katy Perry, but when performed live, the differences between the tracks are bright and glaring. Case in point: the 2014 People's Choice Awards.

Bareilles' performed simply standing at her piano, even wearing flat oxfords to accommodate her stance. There were no pyrotechnics, no weird costumes, no themes, no stunts. Bareilles, unlike Perry, relied solely on her music to deliver the thrills. And when your voice and instrumentation are as great as this, really, it's all the audience needs.
