Rihanna Set a Record for Losing at the Grammys, Yet Was Still the Best Part of the Grammys
Rihanna and Kanye West have yet another thing in common, apart from being longtime musical collaborators, fashion darlings, pop culture provocateurs and personal friends of Blue Ivy: their record-setting Grammys snubs.
Despite eight nominations each at the 2017 Grammy Awards on Sunday night (Feb. 12), neither Ri nor Ye took home a single golden gramophone from the Recording Academy.
"That set a new Grammy record for the noms in one night without a win. Both artists have won big in the past. West has won 21 Grammys; Rihanna has won eight," Hits Daily Double confirmed on Monday morning (Feb. 13).
Kanye was nominated in categories including Best Rap Song ("Famous"), Best Rap Album (The Life of Pablo) and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration ("Ultralight Beam"), while Rih popped up in categories including Record Of The Year ("Work"), Best R&B Song ("Kiss It Better") and Best Urban Contemporary Album (Anti). (It's also worth noting that Rihanna recently notched her longest-running hit ever with Anti track "Needed Me," which was also nominated for Best R&B Performance. Of course, she lost that one too.)
Kanye, as we knew well in advance, was a no-show at the ceremony.
Rih still showed up, however. And despite being thoroughly shafted (and not in the good sense of the word) throughout the (seemingly endless) evening, she still walked away from the ceremony having pulled off the best performance: as a thoroughly #unapologetic audience member, bedazzled flask gripped firmly in hand.
From sneaking shots off-camera (or so she thought) to cackling in her seat to blowing kisses Bey's way, the world quickly took notice of her now signature Rihanna-Sitting-In-The-Audience style, including her contemporaries like Pete Wentz: "Yeah @rihanna vibe at the Grammys is what I'm aiming for in life in general," he tweeted.
Rihanna evidently agreed with the world's assessment of her in-seat performance, Instagramming a video of herself taking a shot in the crowd immediately following the show.
But rih-lly though, what's more inspiring than seeing someone get snubbed over and over for four hours and still come off looking like the night's biggest winner? #PhuckYoRecordingAcademy.
Rih-actions below. Cheers: she'll drink to that.
