Normani has had quite the year as a solo artist. She collaborated with Sam Smith. She toured with Ariana Grande. She dropped a hit single in "Motivation" and is prepping her debut album. And she's wrapping up the year by gracing the cover of Cosmopolitan's "Decembuary" issue. Though the singer seemingly has no problem with being in the spotlight, she divulged to the outlet that this wasn't always the case.

"I remember always being asked, 'Why do you wanna be in a girl group? So you can hide?'" she recalled to Cosmopolitan, referring to her time as member of Fifth Harmony. "And that's exactly what I was trying to do."

Thankfully, during her time making music with Camila Cabello, Ally Brooke, Dinah Jane and Lauren Jauregui. the singer had an epiphany where she realized she's special on her own. "I'm not sure what that turning point was, but I was like, Normani is enough," she said. "You can be onstage and perform and you can be enough."

Breaking out of her shell of "lifelong shyness" has turned the 23-year-old into a force to be reckoned with.

"There are a lot of moments where I feel like I have no room to make mistakes," Normani admits. "I could fall down a million times, but that is not enough for me, ever," she declared. "I'm gonna get back up."
