All you redheads, or Gingers as they are also called, May 26th is your day to celebrate being one of the few redheads in the world.
According to WUSA-TV, here are 10 fun facts about redheads (Gingers).
- Redheads make up less than 2% of the world's population. The two countries with the highest concentration of redheads are Scotland at 13%, followed by Ireland at 10%.
- Red hair and blue eyes are the rarest hair/eye color combination in the world at 0.17%. Since red hair and blue eyes are recessive traits that's what makes it so rare. Redheads more commonly have brown, hazel, or green eyes says Medical Daily.
- Redhead Days Festival is the largest event for natural redheads and it was actually started by a blonde. The annual event is in the Netherlands and started when an artist, Bart Rouwenhorst, wanted 15 redheads to model for him but over 150 called him. That's when he decided to get them all together and the Redhead Days Festival was born.
- Redheads are more sensitive to pain, or so researchers believe, because of a mutation of a gene that causes hair color. In 2004 a study was conducted that concluded redheads, on average, need 20% more general anesthesia than brunettes or blondes.
- Most redheads are left-handed. Researchers believe an explanation for that is being left-handed is also a recessive trait.
- Redheads are less likely to go grey, unlike other hair colors. Red hair typically fades from red to blonde most commonly.
- Redheads are commonly called "Gingers" which comes from the popular 60's sitcom Gilligan's Island where one of the characters, Ginger, was a redhead. So all redheads are called Gingers in honor of actress Tina Louise who played Ginger in the sitcom.
- Redheads are more commonly featured in commercials according to a 2014 study. The study found that 30% of ads during primetime featured someone with red hair.
- Redheads produce more Vitamin D in a shorter time than brunettes or blondes.
- If you are male and a redhead, you have a lower risk for prostate cancer. The British Journal of Cancer found redheaded men were 54% less likely to develop prostate cancer than men with black, brown, or blonde hair.
