Former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher has recalled buying his mother Peggy a house with his first big paycheck – and that she refused it, forcing him to sell it back to its previous owner.

“The first thing I bought with it was a scooter, a 1954 Lambretta which I’ve still got, and that was on the cover of Definitely Maybe," he said in a BBC radio special. "And then we got a big [check] and I went and bought my mam a house."

“But she didn’t want it," he continued. "She’s like, ‘I don’t want that.’ It was a lovely little cottage up in [the] Heaton Moor [area of Manchester, U.K.]. Beautiful. So I give her the keys and she’s going, ‘What do I want this for?’ I was like that, ‘Better than the one that you’re in, innit?’ And she goes, ‘No, I don’t want it’. So anyway, I had to sell it back to the geezer, she didn’t want it. And she goes, ‘All I want is a brand new gate.’” Describing Peggy as “a cheap date,” Gallagher said he told her, “‘I tell you what, I can do better than that – I’ll buy you a fence and a gate.’ And that all she’s ever wanted. She’s a legend."

Last year Peggy discussed the animosity between Liam and his brother Noel Gallagher, which led to the collapse of Oasis in 2009. “I’ve spent my life worrying about them,” she said. “I think there was that bit of jealously with Liam and Noel. Noel was beautiful as a baby and then Liam comes along – it takes the limelight off you. You could tell disagreement was there with them. I was glad they were in a band together. I would not have wanted Liam in a band without Noel. But it all happened too quick.”

Liam reported earlier this month that the feud had finally been settled, and vowed to end the public ”slagging” of his brother – but that didn’t stop him taking a Christmas pot-shot at Morrissey this week. “Miserable Xmas to Morrisey,” he tweeted on the big day, leading to a reply from actor David Morrissey, who corrected his spelling and added: “thanks very much!”
