A new law will take effect in Texas to give direct access to emergency personnel in hotels and other businesses.

According to NewsWest 9, hotels and other businesses that require anyone to dial 9 to get an outside line will soon have to set up their phone systems to be able to direct dial the 911 service.

After a tragic incident in Marshall, Texas in 2013, Senate Bill 788 was signed into law last year by Governor Greg Abbott.

The bill was named "Kari's Law" after Kari Rene Hunt who was killed by her husband in a hotel room while Kari's daughter tried to call 911, but was not aware she had to dial 9 first.

By September 1, all companies in Texas will be required to have phone lines where 911 can be accessed directly without having to dial 9 to get an outside line first.
