Something new will soon be rolling through the streets of Midland, and it’s designed to make the city feel safer in places patrol cars simply can’t reach.

The Midland Police Department is preparing to launch a new Bike Unit, built around electric bicycles that give officers greater mobility, visibility, and access, especially in high-traffic areas and tight spaces.

Midland Police Department Announces New Bike Unit

Unlike traditional patrol vehicles, e-bikes allow officers to move quickly without the limitations of size or parking.

On foot, officers are limited by speed and distance.

In a patrol car, they’re restricted by curbs, crowds, and narrow pathways.

On an electric bike, officers can travel two to three times faster than walking, slip easily through parking lots, downtown corridors, and event spaces, and still remain highly visible to the public.

That combination is a major part of why the department believes the new unit will have an immediate impact.

When Will the New Bike Unit Hit the Streets?

Training for the Bike Unit is already underway, and officers are expected to begin cruising Midland streets later this year.

The timing seems to be intentional. Vehicle burglaries remain a significant issue locally, particularly during the holiday season when shopping centers are packed and cars are often loaded with purchases.

Seeing officers actively patrolling parking lots on bikes adds a layer of deterrence while also offering reassurance to shoppers heading back to their vehicles, especially after dark.

Beyond crime prevention, the Bike Unit is also about connection. Officers on bikes are more approachable than those behind a windshield, making it easier to interact with residents, answer questions, and build trust.

Whether downtown, at special events, or in busy retail areas, the presence of bike officers allows for quicker response times and stronger engagement with the community.
