A Four Day School Week? One Lubbock Area School Is Making The Switch!

We have all joked about how nice a four-day workweek would be and I know the kids would love a four-day school week.  I know we would have loved to have a four-day school week when I was a kid. Now that I am an adult, a four-day workweek would be music to my ears.  I know there are some companies that have four-day work weeks in the summer. They allow their employees to work extra hours Monday-Thursday and then give them Fridays off.

We have heard of schools talking about doing this but I don't know of a school near us actually going to a four-day school week near us until now. Right up the road in Slaton, just outside of Lubbock has voted to move to a four-day school week for the next three years. The Slaton ISD Board of Trustees voted 4-2 in favor of a four-day school week. The new schedule will be in the 2023-2024 school calendar.

During the fall semester, the students will be off on Mondays and then they will transition to Fridays off in the spring semester. They will then analyze and see which works better. According to the Assistant Superintendent, this will only add about fifteen to twenty minutes to each school day.

I can see how the kids will love but I can also see how this could cause major headaches for parents because even though the kids may have a four-day school week doesn't mean parents will have a four-day work week. Parents will have to find extra child care and possibly transportation for those days. For some kids, the only way they eat is that extra day in school.

I think unless the work week changes to fours, I don't see how this would be beneficial for parents.
