One of the most common questions all Texans ask ourselves is simply put: "What happens if my spider monkey gets loose?" Look, we've all been there. If you have recently asked yourself this, then I've got the perfect answer.

It turns out that this was the reality for one Texan after their diaper-wearing baby spider monkey escaped and ran loose in the neighborhood.

Spider Monkey on the Loose in Texas

A resident of San Antonio had quite the scare when local animal services received a truly odd call. Wandering around the northern part of a neighborhood was a young spider monkey wearing a diaper that was way past the point of needing to be changed.

This monkey, about six months old, was found sitting in the middle of a street when authorities discovered it. Witnesses nearby stated it was running around the neighborhood seemingly up to some no-good monkey business.

How Did It Get Here?

The San Antonio animal services on the scene indicated that spider monkeys are certainly not native to Texas, and that this fella was most likely a result of illegal pet trading. It turns out that spider monkeys are pretty easy to breed and keep captive (well, not in this case).

In case you were wondering if you should ever own a spider monkey, just remember to lock it up before you leave, otherwise you can face some heavy citations like our friend who owned this particular monkey in San Antonio.

They received a total of four citations from the incident:

  • Housing a prohibited animal within city limits
  • Not securing the animal and letting it roam the neighborhood
  • Failing to show proof of vaccinations
  • Failing to have the monkey microchipped

The city made sure to take the baby monkey and send it to professional handlers to ensure it has the proper care it needs. They also notified the public that primates are illegal in San Antonio as pets. Oops.
