Eggcellent Texas Border Patrol Agents Stop Dozens From Smuggling Eggs
Texas border control agents stop dangerous substances from being smuggled into the country every day- from meth to criminals and even the largest liquid fentanyl bust ever.
And we all know just how expensive eggs have gotten... some might say criminally expensive. So what's the solution? Well, smuggling eggs in from Mexico is not the legal solution.
In fact, it is illegal to bring in eggs, raw poultry, unprocessed avian products, or live birds into the U.S. from Mexico. So pretty much any egg or chicken-related smuggling scheme isn't going to fly. (See what I did there?)
According to the Austin-American Statesmen, Texas border patrol agents have recently cracked the case (sorry, I can't help the puns) on over 90 people attempting to smuggle eggs into the States.
It seems innocent enough, however, it is important that eggs from Mexico not be brought into our country because of "the potential transmission of Virulent Newcastle disease," which can cause human disease and is very fatal in birds- a problem we do not need to be added to our current egg crisis.
If you are imagining an extreme Narco-style bust of these egg smugglers, well, it's not that serious. Some people were issued fines, in total about $4000 between all of them. And, of course, they don't get to keep those pricey eggs, either.
Unfortunately, I was unable to find any information on egg-sniffing dogs, so I am unsure how the eggs were discovered. Luckily for agents, dozens to hundreds of fragile eggs are not the easiest thing to...hide (like Easter? Hello? Okay, that's enough).
