Game of Thrones fans can now rest easy: a new prequel will be making its way to HBO's upcoming streaming platform, HBO Max.

After news broke Tuesday (October 29) that the untitled GoT prequel series starring Naomi Watts was canceled, fans were disheartened that they would not get to see the pilot that was already filmed. However, there's another prequel in store for viewers. HBO programming president, Casey Bloys, announced that House of Dragons was given a straight-to-series order for ten episodes.

The show will be set 300 years prior to the events fans saw on GoT and will focus on the story of House Targaryen and their 150-year history. The series, which is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, will eventually culminate in a civil war in the Seven Kingdoms, where two competing branches of House Targaryen will fight to the death.

The show was co-created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal. Condal and Emmy award-winning director Miguel Sapochnik, who previously directed six episodes of the original GoT, will partner as showrunners and will also serve as executive producers beside Martin and Vince Gerardis. Sapochnik will direct the pilot and additional episodes of the series, which will be written by Condal.

HBO Max debuts in May 2020.
