‘Fruit Ninja’ Is the Next Mobile Game Heading to the Big Screen
If you had any doubt that a mobile game would make for a successful film, look no further than The Angry Birds Movie, which effortlessly claimed the top spot at the box office over the weekend. So it’s not particularly surprising that another popular mobile game is getting an animated film adaptation, this one based on the slice-happy Fruit Ninja series. Scoff if you must, but never underestimate the power of brand recognition.
THR reports that Fruit Ninja makers Halfbrick Studios are partnering with producer Tripp Vinson to transform the addictive game into an animated film. The screenplay will be written by J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani, who also recently wrote a script based on Chuck Sambuchino’s fictional survival guide How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack. Like that project, Fruit Ninja will also be a bit tricky to turn into a full-length feature.
Originally released on iPhone and iPod Touch back in 2010, Fruit Ninja is now available on multiple platforms, including Android and Xbox One. The game requires players to slice various pieces of fruit by swiping a finger across their phone’s touch screen. Slicing multiple pieces at once yields extra points, and the game occasionally tosses bombs into the mix to confuse players.
And…that’s basically it. There’s no real story or characters in Fruit Ninja, so Lavin and Damiani have quite the challenge ahead.
