Last year, you may have heard some buzz around the Rachel Wesiz and Rachel McAdams romance drama, Disobedience. Those two names alone will attract eyeballs to any project they’re involved in. The film is also from the critically loved Chilean director Sebastian Lelio, whose Oscar-nominated A Fantastic Woman hits limited theaters tomorrow. But if Disobedience entered your awareness last fall, it was probably because of talk around its super steamy sex scene. Yes, this is the movie where Rachel McAdams spits in Rachel Weisz’ mouth.

The drama follows Weisz as Ronnit, a New York City photographer who returns to the Orthodox Jewish community she fled from as a teen after learning tragic news. It’s partially an awkward situation since she’s back in foreign territory, and since she’s not afraid to speak her mind around women too tied to religion to stand up for themselves. But the trip also unearths the passion and pains of her teen years when she reunites with Esti (McAdams), her childhood best friend and former lover. The first trailer for the film shows the stifling sexual tension brewing between the two women before they sneak off to empty rooms and side alleyways to kiss and embrace.

If you think this trailer is steamy, just wait till you see the film. Last year I wrote about the sex scene, undeniably some of the best – queer or straight – that I’ve seen in a film. They’re throbbing with passion, they’re a bit kinky (hence the spitting), and most wonderfully, Lelio shoots the scene with a tenderness and respect for nude feminine bodies. (This isn’t the stereotypical lesbian sex that has, unfortunately, dominated much of pop culture.)

Here’s the full synopsis:

From a screenplay by Sebastián Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz, the film follows a woman as she returns to the community that shunned her decades earlier for an attraction to a childhood friend. Once back, their passions reignite as they explore the boundaries of faith and sexuality. Based on Naomi Alderman’s book, the film stars Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams and Alessandro Nivola.

Disobedience hits theaters April 27. To hold you over, check out Lelio’s A Fantastic Woman when it hits theaters this weekend.
