We Could Have Seen Coolio Play Scarecrow in Joel Schumacher’s Cancelled Third ‘Batman’ Movie
Among many, many other things, Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin featured a very special cameo: Coolio was the overseer of that random street race Batgirl was involved in, and he revealed recently that he agreed to cameo because he wanted a part in the next Batman film. Namely, he wanted to play Scarecrow. Unfortunately, Batman and Robin was, well, quite bad, and the fifth installment in that Batman series never got made.
Coolio told the Burleson Star (via THR) that Schumacher had promised him the villain role in the Batman movie that never happened.
Batman & Robin was the only Batman that didn’t make money. I’m still sore about that a little bit, cause the only reason I did that part is because they promised me the villain part in the following Batman, which they didn’t do, because Joel Schumacher; They fired him.
He also said he’ll probably never get the call, and that he and Schumacher didn’t have that great of a relationship.
He was supposed to do the two next ones. He and I didn’t get along that good anyway – I mean he made a terrible Batman movie. But the next villain was supposed to be the Scarecrow. They didn’t do it though. Maybe one day – I’m sure they won’t come calling though.
Joel Schumacher revealed back in 2015 that he had also courted Nicolas Cage for Scarecrow, and that he’d wanted the fifth Batman to kind of tie up the series, with Scarecrow and Harley Quinn teaming up to drive Batman insane. A Coolio Scarecrow would also have been plenty nutty and would’ve fit in perfectly with the weird tone of that Batman series. But come on, you have a guy whose name is Coolio and you don’t have him playing Mr. Freeze? Missed opportunity there, Joel.
