TxDOT kicked off its annual "Click It or Ticket" campaign this past Tuesday statewide.

According to NewsWest 9, the campaign is designed to teach people about the dangers of not wearing your seat belt while driving or riding in a vehicle.

The event kicked off this year with a backdrop of 929 pairs of shoes which represents each Texan who lost their life because they did not buckle their seat belt.

The kickoff event featured many speakers like David and Wendy Mills of Spring, TX who lost their daughter Kailee because she did not buckle her seat belt and was killed in a car accident on the way to a Halloween party.

Other speakers told similar stories of losing loved ones and friends because they did not buckle their seat belt, as well as people who spoke as survivors after they walked away from an accident because they wore their seat belt.

TxDOT hopes that this raises awareness of the dangers of being in a vehicle without buckling up and helps reduce the number of seat belt related fatalities in the future.
