Christina Aguilera Literally Snatches Her Own Wig in ‘Where’s Maria?’ Video
After two decades in the spotlight, Christina Aguilera is tired of holding back — in her life and with her haters.
In a new video called "Where's Maria?" released on Friday (May 4), the prolific singer details the vulnerable image she retooled for upcoming album Liberation, looking toward the young, passionate girl she was when she first fell in love with music.
"To me, the purest of reason is to get back to that little girl who just wants to be inspired again by truth and by that sense of passion for music and singing and just feeling free and alive again,” Aguilera says before explaining the reason behind her six-year absence from releasing solo work. “I’ve stepped so far away from that little girl, and if that means going away for a little while and figuring out who you are again and what you need to say, then that’s what you need to do.”
At one point, she says that a "breaking point" came when she began to let go of the "masks" and perfectionism" that sometimes come with being a performer alongside footage of her staring into the mirror as she takes off a long, pink wig.
She also retreads her early childhood and its impact on her life and career, as well as teases another potential track from Liberation with a cappella vocals.
But while much of the video is meditative and introspective, Aguilera concludes on a defiant note: "F--k it. This is who I am," she says, giving the camera the middle finger. "Whoever's not onboard can suck my d--k."
