Just because Chris Hemsworth is unbelievably, ridiculously good looking doesn’t mean he’s not also smart. He knows when a movie is good and when a movie is bad, even when the star of that movie is Chris Hemsworth. In a new interview with GQ, he fully admits the second Thor movie, Thor: The Dark World, was not great.

Here’s the full section of the interview on the film (and the Thor franchise in general):

‘The first one is good, the second one is meh,’ Hemsworth says. ‘What masculinity was, the classic archetype — it just all starts to feel very familiar. I was so aware that we were right on the edge.’ Where in the first two films he played his hero character straight, in the third iteration he injected more humanity and created a character truer to his own spirit.

I rewatched Thor: The Dark World — and every Marvel Cinematic Universe title — in the run-up to Avengers: Infinity War. After a full MCU revisit, I ranked Dark World the second-worst Marvel film in the whole universe, ahead of just The Incredible Hulk. Hemsworth’s assessment jives with mine:

The first Thor wasn’t perfect, but it at least had a kind of soapy Shakespearean grandeur. In terms of scale, both visually and on an emotional level, The Dark World feels like a major step down. It goes out of its way to explicitly say the Asgardians are not gods (even though the ones in the comics are). “We’re born, we live, we die, just like humans do,” explains Odin early in the film. True to his words, several of the main characters are killed ... in surprisingly simple ways. These aliens can live for 5,000 years unless they get stabbed a single time? Who would ever mistake someone like that for a god?

It’s very hard to get passed the idea that Patty Jenkins almost directed this movie (or at least Thor 2; her version would have been very different and might have actually addressed some of those issues with the character Hemsworth discusses in his quote). Oh well. At least Thor: Ragnarok was awesome. Hemsworth will return as Thor in Avengers: Endgame this April.
