Cardi B Defends Controversial Rita Ora Collab ‘Girls,’ Says She’s Had Same-Sex ‘Experiences’
Cardi B is hitting back at those criticizing "Girls," her controversial collaboration with Rita Ora, Charli XCX and Bebe Rexha.
The song, released Friday (May 11), drew the ire of the LGBTQ+ community over the weekend for its problematic lyricism, including a line about "scissoring," as well as getting drunk on "red wine" and kissing girls. Among the openly queer artists to decry the track were Kehlani, MUNA, and Hayley Kioko, who called it "downright tone-deaf" and marginalizing to the "idea of women loving women."
Ora responded to the backlash with a statement on Monday (May 14), saying "Girls" was an "accurate account of a very real and honest experience" in her life and revealing that she's had romantic relationships with both men and women.
"I am sorry how I expressed myself in my song has hurt anyone. I would never intentionally cause harm to other LGBTQ+ people or anyone," she explained.
And now Cardi, too, has chimed in.
"We never try to cause harm or had bad intentions with the song. I personally myself had experiences with other woman [sic] ,shiieeett with a lot of woman ! I though the song was a good song and i remember my experience."
She continued: "I know i have use words before that i wasn’t aware that they are offensive to the LGBT community. I apologize for that. Not everybody knows the correct terms to use. I learned and i stopped using it."
Rexha and Charli have yet to comment on the single's criticism.
