Camila Cabello Makes Solo Artist Debut With ‘Bad Things’ Performance on ‘Ellen’
While Cabello has performed without her former Fifth Harmony bandmates in the past -- previously with Machine Gun Kelly, but more notably alongside Shawn Mendes after the two recorded and released the 2015 hit "I Know What You Did Last Summer" -- she had yet to do so as an official solo artist until now.
Cabello's Ellen appearance comes weeks after the downsized version of Fifth Harmony made their first public performance as a quartet during the 2017 People’s Choice Awards. They kicked things off with a declaration of unity -- that also comes off as a dig at the former member -- singing, “We ain’t worried about nothin’, we ain’t worried ’bout nada."
And considering the way Cabello ultimately parted ways with the group, it's not too much of a stretch to believe they approached the situation with (subtle!) public retribution.
While both parties have settled on public diplomacy at this point, Fifth Harmony’s initial statement announcing Cabello’s departure indicated some level of shock and inner-turmoil within the group. They noted they’d been “informed via her representatives,” of Cabello’s decision to quit the group — a claim the former X Factor contestant refuted in her own statement.
"I was shocked to read the statement the Fifth Harmony account posted without my knowing. The girls were aware of my feelings through the long, much needed conversations about the future that we had during tour. Saying that they were just informed through my representatives that I was ‘leaving the group’ is simply not true,” she wrote, in part, hours later.
But 5H had the final word, posting one last statement denying any proper communication had taken place between the members, writing, "after months of rejection from her and her team, these supposedly lengthy conversations in fact never happened, although we pleaded. We have tried with exhausted efforts and hearts to keep this group alive as the five of us, and we want it to be very clear that unfortunately those efforts were not mutual.”
