The old building of the Southwest on Texas Ave. and Big Spring St. has its date with demolition set.

According to NewsWest 9, the date will be Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 8 a.m.

A nine block area of downtown from Ohio Ave. on the north, Loraine St. on the east, Wall St. on the south, and Marienfeld St. on the west will be considered an exclusion zone and blocked off to minimize dust exposure to the community.

The exclusion zone will be in effect from 11 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2019 until noon on Saturday, March 16.

“After decades of an empty building, we are thrilled to remove this eyesore. This is a milestone in our efforts to revitalize and renew the heart of downtown,” said Mayor Jerry Morales.

The last demolition of a building with explosives happened over 10 years ago when the Midland Savings Building was imploded in November 2008.

City of Midland officials advise the public to avoid the downtown area during the demolition.
