The winds of winter have died down for Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and now it’s on to their next project. According to Variety, the pair have teamed with Warner Bros. to produce (and possibly direct, although that’s not yet clear) a Lovecraft movie, based on a graphic novel about the life of the famous horror novelist:

The “Lovecraft” graphic novel chronicles the life of H.P. Lovecraft, whose books included “The Call of Cthulhu,” “The Rats in the Walls,” “At the Mountains of Madness,” “The Shadow over Innsmouth” and “The Shadow Out of Time” and spawned the idea of Lovecraftian horror. While plot details for the movie adaptation are currently unknown, sources say Benioff and Weiss’ take will tackle the idea of Lovecraft’s otherworldly creatures being real.

Benioff and Weiss already have a development deal with Netflix; they also recently walked away from a deal to create the next Star Wars movie trilogy after The Rise of Skywalker. One imagines they would have a lot more creative control (and, potentially a bit more financial control) over this Lovecraft project.

Benioff and Weiss are far from the first directors to attempt to adapt Lovecraft. Guillermo del Toro famously spent years trying to adapt Lovecraft’s “At the Mouth of Madness” into a film, and it never quite came together. Color Out of Space, directed by Richard Stanley and starring Nicolas Cage, is based on a Lovecraft short story and opens in theaters on January 24, 2020.
