The following post contains SPOILERS for Avengers: Infinity War and also for the 1956 costume epic The Ten Commandments.

Have you recovered from the ending of Avengers: Infinity War yet? Still curled up on the floor in a fetal position? It’s okay; it gets better. We still have Avengers 4 to look forward to next year, and presumably it will restore some of those dead Avengers to life. Otherwise Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is going to be a super depressing movie about Ned and Aunt May just looking at Peter Parker’s empty bedroom and crying a whole lot.

Ah, but not so fast. Maybe some of these characters are dead? In a new interview with Buzzfeed, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely say that the audience that think everything is going to get wiped away in the next movie are sorely mistaken. Here was Markus’ exact quote:

[Avengers 4] doesn’t do what you think it does. It is a different movie than you think it is. Also…[the deaths are] real. I just want to tell you it’s real, and the sooner you accept that, the sooner you will be able to move on to the next stage of grief.

What stage of grief is the one where you burn all your Spider-Man shirts and then run naked out into the street, screaming like a banshee? Cause that’s the stage I’m at right now.

Look, what are they going to say? “Oh, yeah, those deaths are meaningless. Everyone will be back. In fact, you don’t even need to see Avengers 4, here’s exactly what happens!” While we might want that, this is exactly what they have to say; that the Avengers are dead, that you are not prepared for Avengers 4, that it’s going to blow your mind. (They literally said that in another part of the interview, in fact.)

For now, they have to continue the ruse, however untrue, that the Avengers are dead and gone, including the ones we know have new movies coming out in the next couple years. But it’s kind of fun not knowing what’s going to happen. So let’s go along with this and maybe in a few months they’ll pull a Ruffalo and let some spoilers slip by mistake.
