Alyson Stoner Shares Emotional Letter About Her Sexuality
Actress Alyson Stoner has been in the spotlight since she was a child but the former Disney star is now opening up about her sexuality. In a letter penned for Teen Vogue on Friday (March 30), Stoner didn't put a label on herself but said she now realizes she's attracted to men, women and people who do not define themselves.
“I, Alyson, am attracted to men, women, and people who identify in other ways,” she wrote. “I can love people of every gender identity and expression. It is the soul that captivates me. It is the love we can build and the goodness we can contribute to the world by supporting each other’s best journeys.”
The actress also opened up about her fear of coming out due to people telling her it could hurt her career. “Some people in the industry warned me that I’d ruin my career, miss out on possible jobs, and potentially put my life in danger if I ever came out,” she added.
“My dream and all I’d worked tirelessly for since the age of 6 was suddenly at risk by my being... true to myself. Imagine receiving death threats (as I have); would you choose to live a lie in order to protect your loved ones?" Stoner continued.
Known for her roles in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Cheaper by the Dozen and a number of Missy Elliott music videos, Stoner is now being praised on Twitter for her open letter.
"Between hayley kiyoko and alyson stoner disney channel really paved the way for some lesbian icons," tweeted one person. "Alyson Stoner just came out, 20gayteen truly is the year of the queers," wrote another person.
Along with her letter, Stoner also released a new song called "When It's Right," which deals with her coming out story. Listen to "When It's Right" below.
