If you saw Deadpool this weekend (and there’s a very, very good chance that you did), you likely saw the new trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, the J.J. Abrams’ produced sorta-sequel to Cloverfield. What you may not have noticed, however, is a split-second flash of an image right after the film’s title. What are these images and what do they mean? Let’s try to find out.

There were five separate 10 Cloverfield Lane trailers each sent to the four major movie chains — AMC, Regal, Cinemark and Carmike — plus one for all other theaters. The trailers were all exactly the same except for one frame, which flashed right at the end. Likely imperceptible to the human eye, you can only make out what these images are by freeze-framing them and because this is the internet, that is exactly what has happened.

Uhhh, okay? There’s an illustration of a man falling in water, a tag on a military survival bag, a cartoon of a monkey smoking a cigar, a team photo of an old football team and a close-up of a nautical-themed magazine. Not exactly the confirmation of the Cloverfield monster you may have been looking for. But, if you’re a fan of viral marketing, there may be something more to this.

Each image also appears to have numbers on them. The first image is captioned “Figure 15”. The monkey has “9, -9” on his shoulders. The magazine has the numbers “5742” written on it. The football player’s jersey number is 68. The tag is blurry but looks to have the numbers “012”. All images are to Navy-themed (that’s a photo of the Navy football team).

So, now what? Well, that remains to be seen. The numbers could be latitude and longitude coordinates, a phone number or an IP address. Whatever they are, fans haven’t found out their meaning yet, but it’s only a matter of time before someone cracks the code.
