Zack Snyder has finally lined up his next project following Justice League. Next up, Snyder will direct an adaptation of Ayn Rand’s 1943 novel The Fountainhead, a book that comes with its fair share of controversies.

The Watchmen director announced the news while answering fan questions on Vero (h/t Vulture), that social media platform you’ve only ever heard of because of Snyder. This has been a long-in-the-works passion project of his for some time. Back in 2016 he told The Hollywood Reporter, “I’ve always felt like The Fountainhead was such a thesis on the creative process and what it is to create something. Warner Bros. owns [Ayn Rand’s] script and I’ve just been working on that a little bit.” The novel is essentially about a visionary who struggles in a world that values conformity over independence – is Snyder trying to tell us something?

Rand’s novel follows Howard Roark, a modernist architect who butts heads with the conventionalism of the rest of the architectural community, and refuses to fit in with them. The book has also been subjected to criticism for Rand’s portrayal of women and a depiction of rape during a scene between Roark and his female partner. Snyder certainly has a lot to update and tweak about the novel if he plans to avoid controversy. His won’t be the first attempt to bring Rand’s story to the screen, though. It was first adapted in 1949, starring Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal.
