Many California residents are undoubtedly familiar with the story of Sarah Winchester — or at the very least, the house she lived in, which is now a tourist attraction. It’s also the subject of the new horror film, Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built, starring Helen Mirren as the titular widow. As you can see in the first trailer, the movie is really pushing the haunted AF house angle.

Winchester’s story is a fascinating one of grief, obsession and madness. The widowed wife of gun magnate William Wirt Winchester, Sarah inherited a controlling stake in her husband’s company (along with $20.5 million) and moved out to California, where she used her inheritance to begin construction on a house — operating under the belief that the only way to appease the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles was to continuously build on the home. This resulted in dozens of rooms, doors and stairs that lead to nowhere, windows that look onto other rooms, and various other curiosities.

Construction on the house continued (according to some reports, non-stop) until Sarah Winchester died in 1922. But she did truly believe she was haunted, an aspect that dominates the trailer for the upcoming film from Peter and Michael Spierig, the duo behind Daybreakers and Jigsaw (in theaters this week). It looks…a little wacky, to be honest, but there’s something undeniably appealing about watching Helen Mirren draped in veils and tormented by ghosts in a haunted horror flick.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film, which co-stars Jason Clarke:

Inspired by true events. On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world. Built by Sarah Winchester, (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren) heiress to the Winchester fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an incessant twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms. To the outsider it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman’s madness. But Sarah is not building for herself, for her niece (Sarah Snook) or for the brilliant Doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) whom she has summoned to the house. She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters…

Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built hits theaters on February 2, 2018.
